Chundu Island
Enjoy a warm and inviting island getaway tucked away in the gorgeous Zambezi National Park, right beside the breathtaking Zambezi River.
Introduction
Chundu Island Camp is located just 21 km from the breathtaking Victoria Falls, nestled within the beautiful Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe.
You’ll enjoy a beautiful journey to the camp as you travel through the national park in comfortable 4x4 safari vehicles, typically lasting around one to one and a half hours—depending on how many wonderful animals you get to see along the way.
It’s a wonderful journey, and afterwards, a quick 100-meter boat ride will bring you onto the island itself, adding a little extra adventure to your trip.
The camp welcomes visitors year-round, and each season offers a unique experience that can be quite special. Feel free to reach out to us for more details — we'd love to share more about what each time of year has to offer!
Chundu Island is truly one of the most beautiful spots along the upper Zambezi River. It's about 1 km long and features a lovely, soft, white-sand beach at its upstream end. The island is lush with large natal mahogany, Acacia albida, and water berries, providing plenty of shade—perfect for escaping the summer heat. Visitors often catch glimpses of resident bushbuck and monkeys, and sometimes even elephants cross the channel to forage on the rich food supplies. For bird enthusiasts, it's a true paradise, home to many endemic species that are highly prized by "twitchers' looking to spot rare and beautiful birds.
Chundu Island has recently renovated its accommodations, offering a charming collection of 8 East African-style tents that line the island's edge. Each tent is thoughtfully positioned to provide guests with both privacy and stunning views. Built on platforms, these open-plan tented rooms feature cosy twin or king beds, en-suite bathrooms with a tub, sink, and toilet, and refreshing outdoor showers. Bright, airy windows and sliding doors bring in plenty of natural light and open onto a cosy wooden deck. The deck is perfect for relaxing on the day bed or enjoying the beautiful view of the Zambezi River.
The main common complex of the camp features a cosy lounge, inviting bar, and charming dining area. It opens onto a spacious deck offering breathtaking views of the Zambezi River and the abundant wildlife along its banks. In the evening, you can gather around a warm fire pit in the centre of the deck, perfect for relaxing under the stars. Nearby, just around the corner from the lounge, there's a lovely swimming pool shaded by majestic trees, creating a peaceful oasis. Guests can enjoy delicious meals and local beverages included in their stay, and wine enthusiasts will appreciate the well-curated South African wines in the cellar.
The beach, which is beautifully exposed during the low water months from July to February, offers a lovely spot for guests to enjoy meals and relax. They can also arrange memorable sundowners and special occasions whenever you wish.
The activities included in the fully inclusive rate are designed to provide you with a genuinely memorable experience. You can enjoy bird watching with a welcoming local guide, exciting guided game drives in the morning and evening on the mainland within Zambezi National Park, delightful guided safari walks, and peaceful Zambezi River cruises during both the gentle morning hours and the beautiful sunset. They thoughtfully included these activities to help you create wonderful memories in a warm, inviting environment.
Chobe day trips, fishing trips, and Victoria Falls activities are not included in the price, but we're happy to assist you in arranging them when you're ready!
Here's what the Travel Agency considers.
Chundu's location is truly stunning, offering a peaceful retreat with ample privacy and breathtaking views of the River and the Zambezi National Park. It's an ideal place to unwind and enjoy some well-earned relaxation.
While the game viewing in Zambezi National Park isn't as legendary as some other safari spots, it offers a wonderfully relaxing experience. If you're dreaming of endless animal encounters, this might not be your top choice. However, it's a charming place to unwind, enjoy birdwatching, take scenic game drives, and enjoy peaceful cruises along the Zambezi River. Plus, the fishing here is quite enjoyable, making it a lovely spot for a relaxed and memorable trip.
Since you're so close to Victoria Falls, it's great to take some day trips into town to enjoy all the activities available. However, when you're staying in such a beautiful place, it's understandable you'd want to soak it all in and not leave too often. I see this area as a wonderful extension to your time at the Falls, perfect for a few relaxing days.
It's really great for anyone who has at least 4 days in the area—two days exploring town and then two days at Chundu. If your schedule allows, I warmly suggest spending a couple of relaxing days here to truly enjoy it truly.
